Forest Tenure Opportunity Agreements (FTOAs) and FTOA Guidelines

In accordance with the Forest Act, First Nations may be awarded forest tenures without competition, as part of an interim measures agreement, treaty related measures agreement or economic measures agreement. In the past, this was accomplished through Forest and Range Agreements and Forest and Range Opportunity Agreements (FRA and FRO) and through other direct award agreements.   Forest tenures, including First Nations Woodland Licences, will now be awarded as part of Forest Tenure Opportunity Agreements (FTOA).

Information on the various types of replaceable direct award forest tenures is located here.

To learn about FTOAs, please refer to the direct award guidelines located at the First Nations Relations Branch website located here.

First Nations interested in signing FTOAs are encouraged to contact forest tenures staff located at their local district office – see map located here: https://www.for.gov.bc.ca/mof/maps/regdis/regdismap.pdf.  For further information on FTOA policy, please contact the First Nations Policy Forester, First Nations Relations Branch.
