RESOURCE ROAD RADIO COMMUNICATIONS

Standard Resource Road Radio Communications Protocols
Standard resource road radio communications protocols are being implemented on Forest Service and other resource roads in the Province of British Columbia.  The implementation follows on successful outcomes of pilot projects examining whether road user safety could be improved through standardized protocols for mobile radio communications when travelling on resource roads in BC. The pilot projects consisted of implementing: standardized radio communications signage, a set of dedicated resource road radio channels, and standardized call procedures.  The pilots occurred on Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and in the South Peace areas of the province.  more

RESOURCE ROAD RR CHANNEL MAPS
The maps provided below are for information only. Users using mobile radios while communicating location and direction on resource roads must use radio channels/frequencies that are posted.  Posted radio channels (or frequencies) will supercede those on any map.

It is recommended that those using mobile radios on resource roads have the full bank of standard resource road radio (RR) channels programmed in the standard format, by commercial radio technicians.  It is discouraged to have select RR channels programmed into mobile radios as channel assignment may change with no notice. Users will be best equipped with the full bank of standard RR channels.

In implementing the standard bank of radio channels, the full landbase, in a specified area, is mapped with RR channel assignments.  Polygons are denoted where a specified RR channel is assigned.  This is done in order to avoid potential conflicts and overlaps between channel assignment polygons and other areas using the same channels.
The maps posted below have had their full areas mapped for new channel assignments, however, in some cases, the channel assignments have not been implemented on the ground.
As areas of the province transition to the standard bank of RR channels, it is recommended that users retain previously used frequencies until such time as they are sure they are no longer required.
In transition to new RR channels and communications protocols, users are advised to exercise additional caution when travelling on resource roads and drive safely according to conditions and weather.
Users are also reminded that almost all resource roads are radio assisted not radio controlled and not to drive exclusively according to the radio. Users should be driving safely to the conditions and weather at all times.
