The following questions will determine how much you already know about managing forests for biodiversity.

  1. What do you already know about managing for biodiversity at the stand level in silviculture practices?
  2. What recommendations do you already know for managing for biodiversity at the stand level in silviculture practices?

A variety of options and practices exist for maintaining stand-level biodiversity in silviculture operations. Future desired stand structure could be achieved through various silviculture practices.

For more information, see Franklin, J. F., Berg, D. R., Thornburgh, D. A & Tappeiner, J.C. (1997).

For example, variable density stocking, mixed species planting, variable density spacing, and retention of specific trees as wildlife trees, contribute to stand structural diversity and spatial heterogeneity.

These techniques can be applied to both even- and uneven-aged silvicultural systems, and in sites that require reclamation or where very few stand structural elements exist.
