Reforestation of burned and cut-over areas in sub-boreal and boreal forests of North America has been hampered by a number of factors, including a generally short planting season and a restricted labour supply. These problems have stimulated research across Canada and the United States aimed at developing methods to permit the successful planting and establishment of seedlings during the entire period when areas scheduled for regeneration were free of snow or frozen soils. This report presents a brief review of the North American literature and discusses the results of recent attempts to extend the planting period in British Columbia throughout the snow-free season.
