The objectives of this study were to gain preliminary information on the variation in timber values associated with distorted growth (sinuosity and branching), and to establish sampling requirements for the development of statistically significant value-based stem distortion classes. The stands examined in the study were chosen for two reasons: firstly, they were among the oldest Douglas-fir plantations available in the CWHb1 biogeoclimatic variant., with height and diameter distributions similar to those of the trees used in the second growth Douglas-fir study; secondly, the trees in these studies offered a wide expression of sinuosity and branching characteristics - a necessary prerequisite for the development of value-based stem distortion classes.
