The most productive ecosystems for the growth of Engelmann spruce in the coast-interior ecotone of southwestern British Columbia were identified and analyzed. A complementary study of the taxonomic relationships of the spruce in the same area suggested that hybrids between Engelmann and Sitka spruce might occur, based on an analysis of cone characteristics, but that the spruce in the "most productive ecosystems" was in fact Engelmann. Silvicultural recommendations are given for the management of these Engelmann spruce ecosystems.
