|The purpose of this project was to develop a standardized habitat model for the Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis laingi; hereafter goshawk) across this subspeciesí range in coastal British Columbia. The overall model consists of 3 components: a goshawk nesting habitat model, a foraging habitat model, and a "territory" model. The "territory" model was used primarily for analysis purposes to assess the amount and distribution of nesting and foraging habitat relative to average goshawk territory size in the region. The structures of the nesting habitat and foraging habitat models are based on the Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) methodology. This report summarizes the variables used in the models and the ratings assigned for each variable which were developed based on observed habitat characteristics at goshawk nest areas in Coastal BC, relevant literature, and the expert opinion of the authors. A separate report detailing the results and outputs of the model has been prepared by Cortex Consultants, who implemented the model. To date the model has been applied to two of four goshawk conservation regions: Haida Gwaii and part of the North Coast. Completion of the remaining portions of the North Coast Conservation Region as well as South Coast and Vancouver Island Conservation Regions is planned for 2006/2007.|
