The 56.5 km. ephemeral stream is located at 56.5 km. on the Talchako FSR, in a portion of the Bella Coola River Watershed that has few opportunities for rearing and overwintering juvenile salmonids. The water source for the stream is primarily toe of the slope ground water. The stream typically dries during Feb. / Mar., remaining ponds freeze and as the water table lowers all fish present perish. Field work on this project was completed during Mar. / 06. Two excavators were used, a John Deere 200LC and a small Bobcat 331. The small ponds in the stream were filled with gravel and were replaced with four large ponds, each with a minimum depth of 1.5 m. at extreme low water. Large wood ( portions of trees and stumps located on site ) were secured into the banks of all ponds. All disturbed soils were seeded with grass, 1 3 m. cedar trees were moved by excavator to key locations and approximately 500 cedar seedlings were planted adjacent to the reconstructed stream and ponds. The stream was dry during construction and all sediment laden water ground water in the new ponds will have settled by the time stream flow resumes in April.
