Managing density and composition of conifer/broadleaf mixtures is achieved with a range of silviculture treatments at various stages of stand development. Precise information regarding conifer productivity responses to broadleaf threshold densities, and the appropriate application of silviculture treatments to achieve those thresholds, needs to be acquired through careful experimentation, sampling and modeling. Existing experiments in the ICH zone investigating birch/conifer mixtures in 10-50 year-old planted and naturally regenerated stands have provided an excellent opportunity to assess growth, health, community structure, light environments, stand development and competition thresholds. This project involved: publication of results from four studies (Birch/Conifer Competition Study, Birch/Conifer Retrospective Study, Birch/Conifer Radii Study, and Birch/Douglas-fir Thinning Study) in scientific journals; collection of light, growth and mortality data from several study sites (Birch/Conifer Competition Study, Birch/Conifer Retrospective Study, Birch/Conifer Stumping Study, Birch/Douglas-fir Thinning Study); physiology measurements and root disease mapping in one component study (Birch/Douglas-fir Thinning Study); and stand dynamics modeling using SORTIE-BC. Results from these component studies are addressing broader issues regarding silviculture strategies for successful management of conifer/broadleaf mixtures in southern interior BC.
