Permanent deactivation of the old Nugget mine roads and trails in the upper Raft River watershed was completed using Forest Investment Account funds in the fall of 2004. Issues on the old roads and trails included: uncontrolled surface drainage resulting in erosion with sediment delivery to streams, landslide initiation with impact on fish bearing waters, and potential water related effects on permitted road infrastructure in the area. These issues were first identified by Firth Hollin Resource Science Corporation in a deactivation prescription prepared for other roads in the area1, then under permit to Weyerhaeuser Company Limited (WCL) [refer to enclosed maps]. A recommendation was made in the Firth Hollin report to address old mine road and trail related issues in conjunction with deactivation prescribed as part of their assessment. Prescribed work on the permitted road systems was completed in the summer of 2004.
