The depressed state of the forest industry in Northwestern BC has resulted in the need to review historical methodologies to try to identify opportunities to stimulate the local economy. One area that has received significant attention is deciduous management. Historically, there has been very little use of deciduous species. Recent outbreaks of forest health agents have also raised the profile of deciduous species identifying them as possible alternatives. This paper examines deciduous species found in the ICH biogeoclimatic zone of Northwestern BC. It reviews current inventories, age class distributions, the silvics of species present and makes recommendations (including treatment regimes and best practices) for each species. It attempts to quantify the potential volume available now and in the future. Shortfalls in the existing data have been identified and recommendations to improve the base information have been included. The paper identifies potential for deciduous management, however additional work is recommended to enable this potential to be more accurately quantified.
