The project consisted of writing and submitting two journal articles pertaining to the paper birch/interior Douglas-fir density study. The first journal article, to be submitted to Forest Ecology and Management, outlines the ecological effect of the various paper birch densities on the performance of interior Douglas-fir. A final draft for submission to the journal publishers is nearly complete. The second journal article, to be submitted to Plant and Soil, describing the modified cut-branch technique that was tested and applied in the study to measure leaf gas exchange of interior Douglas-fir in the field has been delayed until September 2003. The thesis committee concluded that further physiological measurements are required to strengthen the findings before submission of an article for publication can take place. We anticipate a final draft will be completed and submitted to the journal in November 2003. Extension of the results will be published as Extension Notes by JEMS (on-line journal), and as an information article in LINKS (on-line extension newsletter), in cooperation with FORREX, pending approval of the individual journal articles by the publishers in compliance with journal copyright laws. Finally, the study results were presented in a poster presentation held at the Winter SISCO 2003 on March 10th in Penticton, B.C.
