Abstract

What is the range of natural variability in dead wood in the IDFdk3? The answer requires integrating information from various sources and methods because our knowledge about past ecological conditions is incomplete. Here we expanded the stand and fire dynamics landscape model we developed for Lignum in 2002 to include dead wood dynamics. We calibrated snag falldown rates and coarse woody debris rates with the best available information. Using the pre-European fire regime, we ran 100 Monte Carlo simulations to derive estimates of the RNV in snag size distribution, coarse woody debris volume, and the abundance of defined stand structure-types (using two classifications: the Cariboo Chilcotin attribute-based seral index and Lignum's Stand Structure Classification).
