Environmental maintenance project road stabilization on Spur 5 of South Fork FSR: project completion abstract

The project consisted of the cutslope stabilization along an old spur road. The old road is located above Monashee Creek, which is a S2 stream at this location (i.e. fish bearing). Stabilization of the cutslope would remove the risk of a failure and subsequent negative impacts (ie: creation of fish barrier, a large volume of sediment introduction, etc.). The site is not located within a community watershed. The site consisted of a 50-meter section of old spur road that had over-steepened cutslopes. An old fillslope failure/ slump (did not enter Monashee Creek) was also present. The area was wet and the soils were fine-grained. Further, the existing road ditches were ponding water. These conditions could collectively cause a future failure, which could deposit sediment into a fish-bearing stream. Therefore, a 50-meter section of road was slated for stabilization works. These works consisted of road prism re-contouring. The prescription was indicated on a sketch prepared by Wildstone Engineering Ltd. dated October 28, 2003.
