Overview studies and Stage II assessments and prescriptions have shown that fisheries resources on tributaries in the project area have been impacted by non-status riparian and lower slope roads. Stream crossings along these roads are frequently the sites of blocked or eroding culverts that pose a risk to fish passage. As well, abandoned roads have diverted natural stream flows resulting in a number of active sediment sources or de-watering of original channels. The 2003 road rehabilitation project continues the rehabilitation of high priority stream crossings that was begun in 2001 in the area. Prescribed Work: Permanent deactivation with no vehicle access was prescribed for 35 moderate to high priority stream crossing sites located throughout the project area. Field assessments and restoration prescriptions were completed in the Fall of 2000 and Winter of 2003. Planned deactivation work included removal of culverts, restoration of stream banks and channels and re-vegetation of disturbed area. Fish exclusion and salvage was required for all sites on fish-bearing stream reaches. As well, sediment control (silt fencing, check dams) was required for works where direct or indirect connectivity to fish habitat existed.
