The Prescribed Fire Committee of the Kamloops Forest District has delineated several candidate sites (IDFxh2, PPxh2) in the Kamloops and Lillooet Forest Districts for ecosystem restoration, using prescribed burning. One site (Medicine Creek/Hat Creek) was scheduled for burning in 2001. Some committee members were concerned about particular habitat features and environmental elements being lost as a result of the burn treatment, due to a lack of pre-treatment assessment for these values. This project entailed taking detailed pre-treatment data for the vegetation overstory and understory, and for forest structure. Walk-throughs were used to determine habitat suitability for any red or blue or special management species. Old-growth and /or critical habitat features were also documented and recorded using a GPS. These methods were used in both control and treatment areas. The process included identifying fire-proofing methods for critical habitat feature retention. Implementation and costs for this ‘mitigation’ was detailed in an Environmental Mitigation Plan. The effectiveness of the methods and process will be tested with post-treatment monitoring one year, two years and five years after the prescribed burn. The process and document resulting from this project could be used to inform standardized environmental mitigation plans for the Kamloops Prescribed Fire Committee.
