Abstract

This project will improve the accuracy of provincial species names and enhance access to historical georeferenced forest health and biodiversity databases maintained by Pacific Forestry Centre's Forest Pathology (DAVFP) and Forest Insect (PFCA) reference collections. These data are widely used by provincial and federal agencies and academic institutions to support research and policy development. To do this, we propose to create MS Excel Spreadsheets of plant host, fungus, and insect species names and taxonomic authorities from the existing data set. We will hire two taxonomists to correct errors and format the data in the spreadsheets using accepted literature and web references. These corrections will be incorporated into the national database, and eventually be used to create 'autofill' lists for electronic data entry and searches. Completion of this project will ensure that all incidences of a species will be consistently and accurately extracted during searches of the database.
