Quality and Surface Modification of BC Softwood for Value-Added Products
|Author(s): Hislop, Barbara (Canadian Forest Products Ltd.)||Subject: Forestry, Wood Science||Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Forest Science Program|
The objective is to investigate innovative polymer treatments of various qualities of B.C. softwood lumber (wood species, density and thickness) to enhance specific properties for high value applications, such as flooring. For example, a 1% share of the high value hardwood flooring market represents US$17 million sales of softwood lumber, a significant market for the SPF species. The systematic approach of this project will extend previous research work to determine the optimum polymer treatment of the B.C. wood species leading to more effective selection of species and materials for the treatment and for applications normally not suitable for softwood lumber.
