Reducing the impact of Armillaria root disease via mixed species plantation including western red cedar

Abstract

Armillaria root disease causes mortality, growth repression, and unstocked openings in juvenile stands in the southern interior of BC. Planting species of low susceptibility to killing by Armillaria ostoyae can reduce losses in new plantations. Indirect evidence from previous studies and preliminary evidence under the current study suggests western red cedar is more tolerant of infection by A. ostoyae. However, there are uncertainties surrounding the nature of this resistance: are host or site factors the underlying reason or does cedar truly have resistant mechanisms that make it more resistant? This work will elucidate the mechanisms of resistance in western red cedar against infection by A. ostoyae and concomitantly provide information on the relative susceptibility of other conifers including western hemlock and Douglas-fir. Results will determine whether the inclusion of western red cedar among planted species will reduce the overall impact of Armillaria root disease to more tolerable levels
