Ecosystems of the UBC Alex Fraser Research Forest
|Author(s): Klinka, Karel (University of British Columbia)||Subject: Ecology, Forestry, Geology, Geomorphology, Hydrology, Inventory, Landscape ecology||Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Forest Science Program|
The Alex Fraser Research Forest is an important education, research, and demonstration facility, used by several universities, colleges, and continuing educational institutions. High quality, large-scale, ecosystem maps will make instruction in ecology (ecosystem mapping, in particular), silvics, silviculture, and other disciplines more effective, and will provide a necessary spatial ecological framework for research and management of the forest. To facilitate this mission, a high quality, large-scale (1:15,000) ecosystem map is needed for the 10,000 hectares of the Knife Creek and Gavin Lake Blocks. This project proposes to produce a map and interpretive material that will (i) serve as an example of advanced ecosystem mapping, (ii) make ecology instruction more effective, and (iii) provide a spatial framework for sustainable management, and (iv) enhance the research opportunities. The maps and other materials will be made available to students, researchers, forest practitioners, and visitors of the forest on CD-ROM and field demonstration sites.
