Abstract

The purpose of this project is to revise the BEC classification and produce a new field guide for the Nelson Forest Region. A preliminary assessment of the BEC system indicates there are significant deficiencies that have serious consequences for a large number of clients in the forest industry and government ministries. We propose a six-year study to: complete a gap analysis of the classification system design a three year sampling plan to refine it, conduct field work to update the BEC database and revise the classification for all subzone/variants and site series, publish a revised BEC field guide, create a web site where digital versions of BGC maps and the BEC field guide are located and can be instantaneously updated and expanded as new information becomes available The revised classification will be subject to a rigorous correlation to ensure the results are compatible with the classification in adjacent jurisdictions.
