|The Nicola Simlkameen Innovative Forestry Society (NSIFS) is made up of First Nations, licensees, and government agencies working towards co-management of natural resources in the Merritt TSA. As part of the mandate of this organization, innovative technologies and processes have been used to support resource planning and management. |
The NSIFS currently maintains a website (nsifs.bc.ca) which serves as a repository for completed projects, as well as the access point for a suite of web-based services implemented over the past four years. This toolset includes a content management system, file library, and query and report frameworks to support Sustainable Forest Management.
Since completion of Predictive Ecosystem Mapping (PEM), The NSIFS has completed many species habitat models based on the provincial wildlife habitat ratings (WHR) standard. In March 2005, the NSIFS launched a web based data platform capable of summarizing these habitat models based on user-defined criteria. To date, just under 200 habitat models, combined with Mountain Pine Beetle modeling, administrative boundaries, and planned harvest areas have been incorporated into this site.
The NSIFS has also worked with local Fist Nations to complete archaeology overview modelling for the entire Merritt TSA. Completed in 2009, these models provide valuable information to guide planning and risk assessment.
