Stevens Creek provides high value fish habitat for kokanee, rainbow trout, mountain whitefish and bull trout. As well, Whatshan Lake is a popular recreational fishing lake.
The original structure was proposed by Ingersol Mountain Enterprises Ltd. in a report dated June 1, 2002. The works was finally completed during the fisheries window from July 15 - August 31, 2004. The report recommends that 15% of the stones be a minimum diameter of 66cm. Upon a quick review of expected stream velocities this sizing seems reasonable based on the Q100 flows of 16.8 m3/sec provided by Dave Grant, P. Eng. in 2004.

The following reports provided additional information:
" Data Summary of Habitat requirements of vulnerable char populations in the west Kooteney region 1996 (Gebhart)
" Fish and Fish Habitat Inventory for TFL 23 1996 (Wildstone)
" Stevens Creek Bridge Crossing CP 204 (Wildstone)
" Whatshan Water Use Plan Overview of Fish, Fish Habitat and Sport Fisheries Within the Whatshan River and Reservoir. (Draft report Whatshan WUP).
