FIA Project 9157003

Fish Passage Restoration site: SMAR-A02, Culvert replacement with a bridge
Project lead: Marcie Belcher (Tembec)
Author: Bernat, Jean-Guy
Subject: Forest Investment Account (FIA), British Columbia
Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Land Base Investment Program
The fish passage culvert inspection was completed by KNRC in 2008. As per recommendations, further assessment of potential fish habitat work was carried out in June 2009 by Interior and KNRC.
The crossing is located ona secondary road. The exisiting 1200mm diameter culvert proved to be a partial barrier to resident Westslope Cutthroat trout. The hydraulic jump at the culvert outlet and water velocities within the culvert were evaluated as a barrier to juvenile WCT but not to adult WCT. The fish habitat assessment above the culvert indicated that replacing the culvert would restore fish access to 650 meters of high value habitat, 465 meters of moderate value habitat and 300 meters of moderate to low value habitat, a total of 1.4 km of stream length. Replacing the culvert would double the length of fish bearing tributaries to Angus creek.
