    Fish Passage Culvert Replacement at 68km Stirling FSR on Affleck Creek

Project lead: Steve Jones (Consultant to Weyerhaeuser)
Author: Jones, Stephen
Subject: Forest Investment Account (FIA), British Columbia
Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Land Base Investment Program
Description:
Selected Crossings on Dale, Wilkinson, Idabel, Stirling, Affleck and Campbell Creeks’, Columbia Environmental January 15, 2007, identified this location as a partial upstream barrier to rainbow and brook trout migration in 2007 with a score of 43 (project 4673001). The existing culverts (photo 1) had been installed prior to 1995, were not embedded, were perched, the small pipe was plugged with bed load and the combined width of the pipes was too small relative to the channel width. There were also high in-pipe water velocities during peak flows and water was flowing underneath both pipes. Last, the culverts could convey only 71% of anticipated Q100 flows.
A hydrologic assessment and new crossing design were completed in March 2007 (project 4673004). Materials were purchased in early 2009 (project 5049002) and the
installation of the structure occurred September 16-18, 2009. The assessments that contributed to the decision to restore fish passage at this crossing are: 1. ‘Fish assage Culvert Inspections at Selected Crossings on Dale, Wilkinson, Idabel, Stirling,
Affleck and Campbell Creeks’, Columbia Environmental January 15, 2007, Score = 43;
