Cayuse and Little Cayuse Watersheds Road Deactivation

Project lead: Mark Graf (International Forest Product)
Author: Swan, Frances
Subject: Forest Investment Account (FIA), British Columbia
Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Land Base Investment Program
Description:
During the 1990's hundreds of kilometres of no-status roads were deactivated throughout TFL 23 under the FRBC Watershed Restoration Program. Generally, the roads were inspected one or two years following deactivation to monitor effectiveness of the treatment, however long term routine inspections were not scheduled or carried out. Further, many non-status road records are not maintained in the TFL 23 road database. In February 2006 Pope & Talbot initiated a FIA project to review previously deactivated non-status roads in the Cayuse and Little Cayuse watersheds in TFL 23. The review followed a three part process: overview risk assessment of all non-status roads in Cayuse and Little Cayuse, field review and deactivation prescriptions and implementation. The overview risk assessment was completed in 2006 and field reviews and prescriptions were carried out in 2006/2007. Works were completed in the fall of 2009. Although many of the non-status roads had been previously deactivated, access management was addressed in the prescription phase.
