The northeast end of Cheewhat Lake, down to the National Park boundary, was logged in 1984, with sections of the east side logged between 1986 and 1992. Resulting bank failures above the National Park boundary have significantly impacted spawning and rearing fish habitats in the lower reaches of stream 3 (Wright, 2002).
Anadromous populations of coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch), chum (Oncorhynchus
keta), sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka), steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and resident and searun coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki clarki), are well documented within the watershed. Harvesting has resulted in increased peak flows, channel widening, aggrading, loss of channel structure, and significant erosion and
sedimentation (Wright 2002). These effects are negatively impacting fish production in this system by reducing the availability of high quality rearing and over-wintering habitats and smothering spawning beds. The basin site was chosen as it is situated below a depositional area of Stream 3, below the confluence of channels 3A-1 and 3A-2.
