|During the course of the work MTE crew inspected a total of 32.5 km of road and 117 crossings. All crossings were inspected in the field and subject to a quick screening process to determine if they merited the full field assessment described in MOE, May 2008. Key factors that screened out a crossing were as follows:|
• Open bottom structures;
• No stream channel associated with the crossing;
• Known/observed barrier to fish passage downstream of the crossing; and
• No fish habitat upstream of the road crossing.
If a crossing was screened out of the full assessment, the culvert was still given a unique ID and a nominal amount of information was recorded:
• Date inspected;
• UTM coordinates;
• Crossing type;
• Crossing condition;
• Reason for screening out; and
A total of 111 crossings were screened out (determined ineligible for assessment and
replacement) and the data from these sites has been entered into an Excel spreadsheet and is included with the digital deliverables for this project. In the Skedans watershed the majority of culverts were found to be wooden box culverts which were automatically screened out. In addition to the culverts that were screened out two roads (SK100 and SK300) were also not inspected. Both these roads were identified as being temporarily deactivated, were covered in very dense alder growth, and the predicted habitat ended near the road crossing.
