|The Village Lakes watershed, located norther Quadra Island, is unique among British Columbia's coastal island systems due in part to its size (71600ha, second largest watershed on Canada's west coast islands) and also because of its diverse ecosystem and interconnected wetlands complex. It contains six lakes totalling 772 ha of surface area with numerous third and fourth order streams and marshes that have historically hosted a rich and diverse fisheries resource, including Cutthroat trout, Steelhead, Sockeye Kokanee, Coho, and Chum salmon. Many of these species have, however, declined in number over the past 10-20 years, with the Sockeye population almost lost. |
The present quality of the feshwater systems within the Village Lakes watershed, particularly from a fisheries production aspect, is not well understood.
The Quadra Island Salmon Enhancment Society (QISES), the proponent for this study, wishes to embark upon a new holistic aproach to salmon management for the area based upon a comprehensive watershed-based study.
The author was contracted and funded by Timber West Forest Products, through their Forest Investment Account Program (FIA), to conduct a Level 1 watershed and habitat assessment with a caveat that the study pertain to that portion of the watershed that falls within the company's TFL 47 area. The balance of the watershed is to be similarly documented under a separate report.
