|The Phillips River watershed is located approximately 70 km northeast of Campbell River on the central mainland coast of British Columbia. The mainstem is approximately 38.9 km long and the watershed has a total drainage of 450 km2 (Figure 1). The Phillips River is considered a high value fish resource and supports five pacific salmon species including coho, chinook, sockeye, pink, and chum. Cutthroat trout, rainbow trout/steelhead, and Dolly Varden can also be found in the Phillips River system. At the request of Western Forest Products Inc, M.C. Wright & Associates conducted a Level 2 Fish Habitat Assessment on Clearwater Creek of the Phillips River watershed in November of 2008. The objective of the Level 2 assessment was to develop a prescription for restoration based on results of the level 1 FHAP conducted in Nov/Dec 2008 by M.C. Wright and Associates.|
Clearwater Creek was identified in the Level 1 assessment as an area of opportunity or restoration works. From these recommendations the level 2 was aimed at addressing the braided section and the limited amount of off channel habitat in Clearwater Creek. Weather conditions prevented the assessment of the braided section, but a detailed prescription was developed for Side Channel 1 and its distributary channels. From this prescription 550m of channel will be created in SC1, and 180m of channel will be created in SC 1.2, a distributary channel of SC1. These side channels will contribute to the off channel rearing and spawning habitat of Clearwater Creek improving the productivity of the Phillips River Watershed.
