Description:
Terminal Forest Products Ltd. has developed a Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP) that is consistent with the objectives outlined in the American Forest and Paper Association's Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) 2005-2009 Standard. The fourth objective within the SFI Standard (2005-2009) specifically addresses biological diversity by stating:
"To manage the quality and distribution of wildlife habitats and contribute to the conservation of biological diversity by developing and implementing stand- and landscape-level measures that promote habitat diversity and the conservation of forest plants and animals, including aquatic fauna."

Within the scope of sustaining biological diversity under Terminal's SFMP there are two objectives:
Objective 1: To manage the quality and distribution of wildlife habitats.
Objective 2: To conserve biological diversity by developing and implementing stand and landscape measures that promote habitat diversity and the conservation of forest plants and animals.

Terminal Forest Products Ltd (Terminal) has adopted both stand-level and landscape-level initiatives to promote the conservation of ecological values within their operational areas.
In 2006 a Biodiversity Monitoring Plan was implemented to assess whether their initiatives are being met, whether they are effective and how they can be improved upon or changed.

This report outlines the methodology and results of the 3rd year of a five-year terrestrial and physical biodiversity-monitoring project by measuring specific indicators or biological/physical elements that will contribute to adaptive management of forest practices. The following documents were used to develop the monitoring guidelines and methodologies.
(a) FIA Activity Standards Document - Biodiversity Standards and Checklist, effective April 1, 2005.
(b) FIA Activity Guidance Document - Biodiversity Monitoring Guidelines, effective April 1, 2005.
(c) Inventory Methods for Owl Surveys - Standards for Components of B.C.'s Biodiversity No.: 42, 2006
(d) Inventory Methods for Woodpeckers - Standards for Components of B.C.'s Biodiversity No.: 19, 1999
