Stream crossing was identified through MO&RF staff as having potential fish passage issues. The crossing was assessed by DWB Forestry Services Ltd. to fulfill the following:
Evaluate to what degree the crossing blocked fish passage,
Identify the amount of available fish habitat above the crossing,
Rank the crossing for rehabilitation to facilitate fish
The West Francois FSR is a typical single lane forest resource access road constructed during the late1970s. The crossing at 12.5 km consisted of 2 closed bottom culverts (900mm and 500mm dia.) installed during initial construction. This crossing was subject to a washout in 2007.
The original culverts were considered a partial barrier to fish migration based on channel construction, seasonal high water velocities and chronic beaver issues at the site. (See Photo 1) The original culvert installation scored 42 on a Parker Assessment. Based on these results the culverts were given a high priority for replacement.
