    Predicting development and productivity of southern interior mixed species stands following mountain pine beetle attack

We propose to collect the remaining data required for the parameterization of the SORTIE-ND stand dynamics model for Montane spruce zone stands in the southern interior of BC. This project received FSP support in 2006/07 (M075020) and 2007/08 (M086020) to collect parameter data for subalpine fir, hybrid spruce and lodgepole pine. We have successfully collected parameter data for subalpine fir and hybrid spruce; however, due to the mountain pine beetle infestation and recent salvage efforts it has proven difficult to locate and sample a sufficient number of pine stands. Furthermore, while validating the model with permanent sample plot data, it became apparent that parameter data for trembling aspen and Douglas-fir is necessary. It is our intention to complete the pine sampling and collect parameter data for trembling aspen and Douglas-fir. Since we require data from pure and mixed species pine stands it is necessary to complete this sampling before the pine in these stands has deteriorated beyond the point of usefulness. Without the information collected from these rapidly deteriorating stands, it will not be possible to properly parameterize the SORTIE-ND model for the MS zone. To complete parameterization of the SORTIE-ND model, we will quantify the growth response of juvenile Douglas-fir and aspen trees (<10 cm dia.) growing under a range of light environments, characterize their probability of juvenile tree mortality, and investigate the effects of competition on the growth and survival of adult lodgepole pine, Douglas-fir and aspen trees (>10cm dia). Our empirical data will be linked to SORTIE-ND. SORTIE-ND is a resource-mediated, spatially explicit, mixed-species forest model that makes population dynamic forecasts for juvenile and adult trees. It has a flexible user-interface that allows incorporation of a wide range of silvicultural strategies (e.g., clearcutting, understory protection, understory planting, diameter limit harvesting, shelterwood, single or group selection and variable retention). With the parameterized model, we can examine how stands will develop following MPB attack and the resulting impacts on timber supply. We will be able to evaluate and estimate timber growth implications on residual trees and regenerated stands in the understory and in clearcut openings. We will also be able to predict residual stand development with and without treatment under various levels of attack. This research will clearly aid the development of science-based policies, regulations and guidelines for the management of mountain pine beetle affected stands
