Description:
In 2008, the shíshálh First Nation was contracted by the BC Timber Sales to conduct a detailed level 1 fish habitat assessment on the Brittain River located in Jervis Inlet, BC. The Brittain River historically supported populations of anadromous salmon and trout in the accessible lower 5-km and non-anadromous trout and char in the upper watershed. Efforts to complete the surveys were hampered by poor weather and water levels. In an effort to compile data an overview flight were conducted on the entire mainstem, on January 21, 2008. This over flight concentrated on the lower anadromous reaches and video footage of the area was collected. On Feb 21, 2008 a ground crew was dropped at the mouth of the river. Water levels and 0.75-m of snow hampered the surveys and only Reaches 1 and 2 were assessed. The results of the limited data from the two surveys identified issues with large woody debris recruitment, limited spawning and holding habitats and potential areas for off-channel development. The rating for the habitats assessed listed the stream as poor based on WRP procedures and identified areas for potential future detailed work that includes survey and design of large wood structures riparian rehabilitation prescription development, detailed spawning habitat rehabilitation planning and development of existing off-channel opportunities.
