Applicable FSP Program / Theme / Topic: Timber Growth and Value Program; 2.0 Design and Analysis of Silvicultural Systems ; 2.1 Complex Stands The Lucille Mountain ESSF Silvicultural Systems Study (EP 1119.01) is a multi-disciplinary research trial, established in 1991, that explores the effects of different silvicultural system treatments and harvesting patterns on high-elevation Engelmann Spruce-subalpine fir (ESSF) forests. The trial examines a spectrum of uneven-aged and even-aged stand management strategies on a mesic site in the ESSFmm1 subzone near McBride, BC. Duration of the trial is planned to be one rotation (100-120 years). Silvicultural systems implemented at this site include clearcut, patch cut, irregular shelterwood, group retention, and single-tree selection systems. Project experimental design and methodology are detailed in DeLong et al (1991) and Jull and Stevenson (2001), and the latter publication also provides a detailed peer-reviewed synthesis of scientific results to Year 8 of the trial. The trial has yielded numerous additional peer-reviewed scientific publications, particularly in the area of regeneration silviculture, seedling ecophysiology, natural regeneration, and soil ecology. The primary purpose of this funding proposal is to support: 1) a periodic (Year 13) remeasurement and related studies of post-harvest stand development, stand and habitat characteristics, and residual stand growth at the Lucille Mountain site; 2) related peer-reviewed publications. And; 3) direct extension of results to forestry practitioners. The last previous remeasurement took place in Year 7, following the 1999 growing season, and the next is planned for Year 20 (2012). As this is the oldest of the active ESSF silvicultural system trials in BC, this remeasurement and supplementary data collection will allow an opportunity to examine current post-harvest treatment response trends and silvicultural outcomes to date. Some new regular measurements / assessments will be added, using protocols that had not been developed when the trial was established. In addition, results will be compared to recent findings of other complementary ESSF silvicultural systems trials in BC at Sicamous Creek and Quesnel Highlands. When the Lucille project was initiated, the clearcut was designated to be the 'control' treatment for regeneration-oriented study components. Arboreal lichen abundance plots were established as a control in the adjacent unharvested stands. However, since then there has been increasing interest in the comparative ability of managed, partially-cut residual stands to meet future timber needs and to provide some late-seral stand attributes. Thus, the need for enhanced monitoring in the unharvested control area has increased, and this is included in our proposal. Specific monitoring activities and investigations will include the following: 1) Remeasurement of twelve (12) 0.18-hectare permanent sample plots across 3 partial-cut treatments, including single-tree selection, group retention, and irregular shelterwood. Remeasurements will include (a) standard tree growth parameters (as per Forest Productivity Council protocol); (b) assessments of tree mortality and damage since the 1999 remeasurement, and (c) recruitment of regeneration in seedling and sapling size classes. The following measurements will be added: (d) coarse woody debris transects, using the Vegetation Resources Inventory protocol; (e) identification of Wildlife Tree and Coarse Woody Debris Types (Keisker, 2001); and (f) increment cores of subsampled trees within each PSP to provide data on stand age structures and allow comparisons of pre- vs. post-harvest diameter growth trends. 2) Plot establishment and description of baseline stand characteristics in four to six 0.10-hectare new permanent sample plots in the adjacent 13-year-old clearcut / plantation treatment unit, to provide for long-term comparisons to partial-cut and uncut treatments 3) Plot establishment and description of baseline stand characteristics in four to six 0.10-hectare permanent stand development plots in the adjacent 150- to 350-year-old uncut mesic stands, to provide for long-term comparisons to partial-cut and clearcut treatments. Extension activities are detailed in the following section.
