|In recent years there has been an increasing demand worldwide for certified wood products. This has led to the development of a number of certification systems to provide assurance to consumers that timber has been produced using environmentally and socially responsible forest practices. The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Sustainable Forest Management System is one of a number of certification systems used in British Columbia. The CSA forest management system sets performance goals and objectives over a Defined Forest Area (DFA) to reflect local and regional interests. The process of CSA certification includes a Public Advisory Group (PAG) comprised of a range of public, Aboriginal, and stakeholder interests. Tolko Industries Ltd. – Cariboo Woodlands Group (“Tolko Cariboo Woodlands”) has developed a Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Plan based on the CSA certification system process. The Plan provides direction for management of forest operations by Tolko Cariboo Woodlands under Tolko held forest licences operated within in the DFA. The SFM Plan will allow forestry operations throughout the DFA to meet the public participation requirements of this national certification standard. Tolko Cariboo Woodlands has been working with the public to develop responsible forest management plans. These planning processes include commitments for monitoring and commitments for public review. To date Tolko Cariboo Woodlands has prepared Forest Development Plans (FDPs) as required by legislation. These FDPs incorporate public input made available through various planning processes. In the near future the FDP process will be replaced by the Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP) process under the Forest and Range Practices Act.|
