From June 14 to September 5, 2006, inorganic fertilizer was added to the Salmon River (Kelsey Bay), Grilse Creek, and the Memekay River for the enhancement of winter-run steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and coho salmon (O. kisutch). A total of 2,295 L of liquid ammonium phosphate fertilizer (10-34-0), was dispensed through five drip stations: Grilse Creek 386 L, Salmon River near Rock Creek Main Line 474 L, Salmon River at the diversion 544 L, Salmon River at Memekay Main Line bridge crossing 515 L, and the Memekay River 376 L. Fertilizer loading rates were adjusted to changing streamflow throughout the treatment period. Water samples were collected June 5, July 24, and August 21, 2006 and analysed for low-level nutrient concentrations. Periphyton samples collected from Grilse Creek and Memekay River showed increased algae abundance in treated reaches. Juvenile fish sampling within treated and control reaches indicated a positive growth response to the inorganic drip fertilizer. An organic nutrient source, Alaskan pollock bone meal was tested in the upper Salmon River below Jessie Creek. Heat-treated to remove pathogens and dried prior to shipping, this product was developed under the guidance of Dr. Ken Ashley of the Ministry of Environment, Fisheries Research Section, Vancouver and experimentally produced by David Murphy of Welcome Harvest Farm Ltd., Texada Island. Water samples from the upper Salmon River were collected on July 27 and August 21, 2006. Periphyton samples collected from treated and control sites indicated a positive algae growth response downstream of the pollock bone meal application.
