Fertilization at the time of planting is a silviculture treatment that has recently been utilized in an attempt to meet silviculture obligations in a more timely and economic fashion. In order to assess its benefits, three tree species, western red cedar (Thuja plicata, Cw), interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca, Fdi), and interior spruce (Picea glauca x engelmannii, Sx), were fertilized at the time of planting in the ICH vk1 Biogeoclimatic zone north of Blue River, British Columbia. The term of the trial was five years and the trees were measured and assessed at the end of first, second, third, and fifth growing seasons to determine the effects of the fertilizer treatment. This experiment confirms that trees do benefit from fertilization at the time of planting.
