Project lead: West Fraser Mills Ltd.
Subject: Forest Investment Account (FIA), British Columbia
Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Land Base Investment Program
Completion of task 1 (Upgrade of 10 GPS collars) for the project "Effects of a Mountain Pine Beetle Epidemic on the Tweedsmuir-Entiako Caribou Population." This is being conducted in conjunction with the Morice and Lakes IFPA (Tweedsmsuir Forest Ltd) and Ministry of Environment. Under a concurrent FIA project plan, Tweedsmuir will be funding tasks 2 and 3 of this project. This project is a component of a larger multiyear project proposal with other funding coming from the Ministry of Environment. The larger multiyear project is intended to document Caribou Habitat use and movements in light of the beetle epidemic, develop specific strategies fro managing the population and their range, and communicating the results. Houston Forest Products is co-funding the 2005/06 work as the caribou herd in question does make use of stands within itís Whitesail operating area. The collars are GPS collars that will be upgraded for use in the telemetry.

Information obtained through the larger multiyear study will aid in identifying forest stands on other caribou winter ranges that will be important caribou winter range following epidemic mountain pine beetle levels, as well as provide information that can be used to update caribou habitat supply models.
