A trial initiated in 1993 in a 110- to 140-year-old Douglas-fir forest near Boston Bar, BC (IDFww) evaluated dispersed tree retention as a method for improving regeneration success by moderating micro-climate and providing seed for natural regeneration. Five treatments were designed to yield a range of understorey shading, and included three densities of dispersed retention from 15 to 90 stems per hectare, a clearcut, and an unlogged control. Treatments were repeated in two neighbouring blocks with distinctly different site conditions.
