A Criterion/Indicator approach to sustainable forest management was developed in British Columbia. To help assess if the goal of biological richness (Criterion 1) is met, Indicator 3 demonstrates if productive populations of selected species or species guilds are sustained and well distributed throughout the range of their habitat. This document describes the process and guidelines followed to eliminate and select species of forest-dwelling vertebrates that occur in Fort Nelson Timber Supply Area, and that would potentially help monitor the provision of habitat for Indicator 3. The selection process focuses on species sensitive to changes in at least one of six structural components (shrubs, dead and dying wood, downed wood, hardwoods, riparian and seral stages.
