Subject: Forest Investment Account (FIA)
Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Land Base Investment Program
The objective of the work was to increase channel complexity, decrease bed scour, and improve local fish habitat value through the addition of large woody debris from a regenerating riparian area. Work was completed on the lower 250 m of South Awun Creek - a tributary to Awun Lake. The stream is an S2 channel hosting resident trout and both coho and sockeye salmon. Spawning and rearing habitat for coho and sockeye salmon was the target for restoration. The South Awun channel was selected for treatment based on past disturbance levels (scour) and a size well-suited to this type of work (< 5.0 m bankfull width). The site was defined as a high priority by a Fisheries Biologist and Forest Hydrologist in a Watershed Assessment Report completed on the Awun River drainage in 2003.
