Abstract

The proposed Fisheries Management Plan involves a watershed based ecological approach where reaches are delineated and stratified and designated into similar ecological classifications (i.e. reach units) based on both biotic and abiotic factors. A differentiation is made between fish bearing, natural and enhanced species assemblages, and non-fish bearing reach units. Fish bearing reach unit types are a surrogate for and represent habitat types where the riparian/instream characteristics provide the available habitat for fish. Non-fish bearing reach units represent types where riparian/instream characteristics provide the water quality conditions for downstream fish usage. The proposed approach is a change from the current buffer width strategy, a static management approach at the site level which may leave relatively low levels of retention on small streams and older age riparian buffer strips around larger streams within landscapes dominated by young regenerating stands.
