Tools to measure sustainable forestry: organelle markers in conifers - final report - year one (2002/3)

Spruce mitochondrial DNA will be used as a source of highly informative fingerprinting markers for monitoring maternal genome inheritance in breeding programs and seed orchards. Together with existing chloroplast markers for paternal genome inheritance, these gamete specific marker systems can measure delivery of "improved" gene combinations from breeding programs to operational reforestation sites. The benefits are an improved ability to predict phenotypic gains, the creation of novel tools to measure forest genetic diversity, and the onset of a genetic monitoring program. Information generated will be used to develop equivalent systems for other conifer species in BC.
