Development and analysis of a provincial natural disturbance database
|Author(s): Taylor, Steve||Imprint: B.C. : Canadian Forest Service , 2003||Subject: Natural Disturbances, British Columbia, Trees, Diseases and Pests, Fire Ecology||Series: Forest Investment Account (FIA) - Forest Science Program|
A better understanding of the frequency, pattern, and interactions between natural disturbance agents (fire, insects) is needed in order to develop sustainable management plans and practices. This project will assemble, organise and digitise historical fire and insect outbreak records held by the BC Ministry of Forests and Canadian Forest Service from about 1925 to present and make it available to other researchers, practitioners and the public through the Internet. Spatial data analysis techniques will be used to characterise disturbance patterns in forest ecosystem in B.C., determine probabilities and interactions. Pilot studies will be carried out to explore how the data can be used in landscape, timber, fire, and habitat management.
