The S500 road system was identified by Weyerhaeuser Company Limited, West Island Timberlands Unit as a high priority for road deactivation because of past and recent failures off this road. The S500 road is constructed across a southerly facing slope at approximately 400 m elevation above Silver Lake. The S500 road crosses steeply sloping terrain where a number of old landslides have occurred, as well as a recent slide event. The road fills are slumping in a number of locations and is considered a very high hazard for additional slopes failures. Environmental Maintenance Project Plan (Roads Activity Area) or Prescriptions (Terrestrial Activity Area) A field assessment and road deactivation report for this high risk section of the S500 road was carried out by Rick MacDonald, P.Eng., dated March 12, 2003. The proposed deactivation work included the construction of cross ditches to better manage cross slope runoff, and the removal of fills placed on steep cross slopes that could fail.
