PrognosisBC


Introduction

PrognosisBC is a growth and yield computer model for simple and complex forest stands. The model forecasts future stand conditions based on the expected growth and mortality of individual trees within a stand. It is best used for projecting an existing stand from a ground-based inventory, but can also initiate and project a stand from bareground conditions. The model’s strengths include its ability to simulate almost any form of harvesting-from clearcutting to partial cutting-and to simulate the impacts of root disease.

PrognosisBC is an adaptation of the U.S. Forest Service Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) developed in North Idaho. PrognosisBC is applicable in many interior zones in BC.

PrognosisBC forecasts future stand conditions based on the expected growth and mortality of individual trees within a stand. The model can predict the development of both even- and uneven-aged, single or mixed-species stands comprised of:

  • Aspen
  • Douglas-fir
  • Larch
  • Grand fir
  • Subalpine fir
  • Mountain hemlock
  • Western hemlock
  • Western redcedar
  • Englemann spruce
  • Lodgepole pine
  • Ponderosa (yellow) pine and
  • White pine

One of the model’s strengths is its ability to simulate almost any form of harvesting-from clearcutting to partial cutting. PrognosisBC can simulate thinning from above, below, or by diameter class-with or without species retention preferences. Thinnings can be scheduled as single or repeated events, by either calendar year or stand condition.

The model is best used for projecting an existing stand from a ground-based inventory, though it can also initiate and project a stand from bareground conditions.

Extensions to PrognosisBC

Several extensions to the USFS Forest Vegetation Simulator make it possible to simulate the effects of fire, pests, climate change and disease.
