What is the theoretical Maximum Green:Red?

January  2002

Back to the Forest Health Data Index | Forest Health Home Page

Maximum Beetle Reproductive Rate:

  • A single female mountain pine beetle produces up to 80 eggs
  • The survival rate to adult emergence is usually less than 20% (80 x 20% = 16)
  • Of the 16 adults that emerge per gallery, approximately 10 will be female

Maximum Green:Red:

  • Thus, the absolute maximum Green:Red is 10:1 but this excludes losses post-emergence due to predation, dispersal and host resistance.
  • Post-emergence mortality ranges from 40 to 60%
  • Green:Red estimates made from field data that excludes sites that are influenced by outside populations rarely exceed 5:1 and are more commonly around 2:1 in Northern B.C., 4:1 in the South.
