Description:
The report 'Stand Density Management in the Cariboo: Recommendations for a Management by Objectives Approach for Post Harvest Naturally Regenerated Pine Stands' (FIRS # 4237011) recommended revisions to the existing regulatory maximum stand density number of 10,000 sph.. The report initially recommended implementation of revised maximum density numbers varying by site indices. The modeling in the report utilized initial stand density as required by the TIPSY growth and yield model. Calculation or interpretation from the initial density value to the appropriate density at the free growing stage requires access to field data as there is not a direct correlation method available. In 2002 the Cariboo Stand Density Management Advisory Committee conducted a small reconnaissance level survey of free growing pine stands with an approximate site index of 12. Confirmation of the recommendations in the report requires access to field survey data over a broad range of site indices. Verification of the estimated initial densities by site index class for the post harvest naturally regenerated pine stands was required to correlate and ascertain where the averages and thresholds for indicated spacing may be applied against the recommended maximum densities. It was felt that sufficient sample data would exist in the RESULTS database, when combined with licensee and BCTSP survey compilations, to verify the average initial density assumptions by site index. An initial query of RESULTS in 2004 had indicated that insufficient data resided in RESULTS and must be supplemented by survey data not yet submitted to RESULTS. Since 2002 a moratorium was placed on the requirement to space stands in excess of 10,000 sph. while government and industry reviewed the issue. Therefore, licensees had not been submitting free growing survey data pending the outcome of the review.
