Description:
Restoration of ingrown stands of ponderosa pine (PPdh2) (Pinus ponderosa) and interior Douglas-fir (IDFdm2) (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca) was carried out using a prescription of partial cutting and slashing in 1999 and 2000. Partial cutting consisted of thinning the forest canopy and removing intermediate layer trees. Slashing consisted of cutting pre-commercial, intermediate layers to reduce the risk of crown fire during prescribed understory burns. The PPdh2 stand was subjected to a prescribed fire in April 2004. Total forage production was doubled on both PPdh2 and IDFdm2 sites 5 years following heavy partial cutting. Forage production on areas partially-cut to allow 85% understory light was almost twice that of areas partially-cut to 52% understory light at the PPdh2 site (658 kg/ha versus 346 kg/ha, respectively). Bunchgrass production was unchanged on lightly cut areas but more than doubled following the heavier cut. Increases in bunchgrass production only occurred at the drier site (PPdh2). Total production on areas partially-cut to allow 65% understory light was almost twice that of areas partially-cut to 35% understory light at the IDFdm2 site (401 kg/ha versus 223 kg/ha, respectively). Bunchgrass production was unresponsive regardless of the intensity of the harvest treatment at the IDFdm2 site. Levels of pinegrass (Calamagrostis rubescens) at the two sites are being maintained or increased relative to rough fescue (Festuca campestris) levels. The ratio of rough fescue to pinegrass decreased under both levels of harvesting at the IDFdm2 site, an indication that rough fescue is decreasing in abundance relative to pinegrass. The frequency of rough fescue was unchanged in response to both partial cutting and prescribed fire at the PPdh2 site. The ratio of rough fescue to pinegrass stayed the same or decreased under both levels of harvesting at the PPdh2 site.
